Use STEM Library to…

  • Collaborate/sponsor research projects

As partners in research, our librarians and staff are dedicated to helping find the background information necessary to get your project off the ground. As collaborators, we offer valuable guidance throughout your project on a variety of topics including patents, research methods, and citation and data management. Our Makerspace is a valuable tool in the prototype development process, and we are happy to collaborate to make your venture successful.

  • Find a lab/space for creating/making

The STEM Library is a space dedicated to collaborative efforts as well as individual study. The Makerspace, located on the first floor of our library, offers 3D printers, laser cutters, and other tools to help you create and experiment with prototypes. Our group spaces are also excellent meeting locations to help throughout the planning and research process.

  • License intellectual property

Our Patent Librarian, Jim Miller, helps with research necessary to patent your creation. While we don’t offer application filling services, we can help you find any background information or previous patents that might impact your intellectual property. We also offer a comprehensive Research Guide to help you get started on the patent process. You can find Jim in the STEM Library Learning Lab, Rm 2403E 10 hours/week. Email or call (301-405-9152) to set up an appointment!

  • Partner with UMD more broadly

As part of the broader University of Maryland Library system, the STEM Library has connections, contacts, and interests in many aspects of campus life. Whether seeking subject expertise from our liaison librarians, or looking for more information on our other spaces and technologies available for use, we look forward to partnering with you!
