Industry Partner Spotlight - Microsoft

From left to right: Whitney Mason (DARPA), Jason Zander (Microsoft), Governor Wes Moore, Charles Tahan (Microsoft), and Zulfi Alam (Microsoft) in the newly opened quantum research center.

Microsoft Executive Vice President Jason Zander and Dr. Charles Tahan take the Main Stage at Quantum World Congress 2026 to explore the convergence of quantum computing, AI, and high-performance computing — and what it means for the future of scientific discovery.

Zander demonstrates how agentic AI could transform the way scientists work with quantum systems, while Tahan takes the audience inside Microsoft’s newly opened 15,000-square-foot quantum research center in Maryland’s Discovery District, including its work with DARPA, partner labs, and a new hands-on quantum hardware makerspace.

Microsoft’s quantum research center is open for discovery in Maryland

Alongside the University of Maryland (UMD) and our industry partners, Microsoft Quantum has opened a new quantum research center, which includes a hands-on quantum hardware makerspace. In conjunction, we are launching an annual research workshop series and funding quantum postdoctoral positions at UMD. Within this center, Microsoft Quantum is providing topological qubits built on our Majorana 2 quantum chip for independent testing and evaluation by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
