Terrapin Works provides cutting-edge resources in rapid prototyping, advanced manufacturing, and digital design for the UMD campus and surrounding community. Each semester, we offer free, hands-on workshops to help students learn practical engineering and fabrication skills. From 3D printing to laser cutting and more, our workshops cover everything from the basics to advanced techniques. No experience or engineering background is needed, all UMD students are welcome.

Find a lab/space for creating/making
Terrapin Works offers access to six unique labs, each equipped with dif ferent tools and machines to support a wide range of fabrication, electronics, and prototyping needs. We offer both full-service and self-service options—submit a job for us to complete, or get trained and use the equipment yourself.
Our labs include:- Advanced Fabrication Lab (AFL) – A digital manufacturing space featuring Consumer-grade & Industrial 3D printing, PCB prototyping, 3D Scanning, and laser cutters, located in Clark Hall Room 2123.
- Instructional Electronics Shop (IES) – An open-access electronics lab with oscilloscopes, power supplies, waveform generators, and soldering stations in Clark Hall Room 1115.
- Instructional Fabrication Lab (IFL) – A hands-on machining workshop with CNC Mills, manual lathes & mills, drill presses, and welding in Clark Hall Room 1119.
- Keystone Woodshop – A fully equipped woodworking shop with equipment from Powermatic, Festool, and SawStop in JM Patterson Hall Room 1212.
- Rapid Prototyping Center (RPC) – A makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutters, water jets, and 3D scanning in the IDEA Factory Room 1107.
- Research Prototyping Lab (RPL) – A specialized advanced 3D printing lab with Metal 3D Printing, Micron-scale 3D Resin Printing, and Industrial-grade 3D Printing in Glenn L. Martin Hall Room 0126.

Our undergraduate and graduate students gain a wealth of industry knowledge in engineering-focused areas to include Additive Manufacturing, Subtractive Manufacturing, Rapid Prototyping, and more.
