In its mission to scale UMD impact, UM Ventures, College Park leverages a variety of services and resources for faculty, staff, and students to protect intellectual property resources, build partnerships with business and government, and return investment to the University and its stakeholders through technology licensing and forming startups. From the laboratory to the marketplace, UM Ventures, College Park provides end-to-end support for researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners.

  • Collaborate/sponsor research projects

    UM Ventures, College Park engages industry through the development of corporate sponsored research agreements and clinical trial agreements. Sponsored research agreements allow companies to leverage UMD resources, facilities, and laboratories and collaborate with UMD scientists.

  • Find and invest in startups

    More than 110 startup companies have been formed to bring University of Maryland technologies to market. UM Ventures, College Park’s Startup Support program seeks to match our startups with innovative investors to promote successful ventures.   • Find entrepreneurship events

    The Startup Support program at UM Ventures, College Park hosts regular Business Fundamentals Workshops to teach business concepts and skills, startup resources and how to take advantage of them, legal issues surrounding startups and many other practical know-how.   • Get business advice for my venture

    UM Ventures, College Park is positioned to identify opportunities that could result in startup companies and provide a variety of services to encourage and launch that potential. This includes offering entrepreneurs access to Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) — seasoned business executives with relevant domain expertise who guide the development of go-to-market strategies and business plans, form management teams, identify and help secure funding for ripe ventures.

  • Identify/apply for funding & grants

    University entrepreneurs are eligible for $600K+ in funding.  Through a partnership with TEDCO, Site Miners assist new startups with business strategy and applications for funding through the Maryland Innovation Initiative.  Contact the Startup Support program to learn more about the various funding opportunities available. We will work with you to identify the appropriate awards and grants, and walk you through the application process.

  • Launch my venture

    The Startup Guide developed by the Startup Support program within UM Ventures, College Park outlines the process of forming and sustaining a startup. UM Ventures, College Park seeks to empower UMD faculty and graduate students to transform their research into successful startups by providing resources and customized guidance through the rich entrepreneurship ecosystem at the University of Maryland and the State of Maryland.

  • Learn about entrepreneurship

    UM Ventures, College Park receives nearly 200 new intellectual property disclosures each year. Our Discovery Portfolio includes hundreds of technologies available for license in the fields of Human Health, Computing, Data, and Discovery; National and Global Security; and Climate Adaptation and Sustainability. UM Ventures, College Park is eager to work with companies of all sizes to bring these transformational technologies to market.

  • Mentor entrepreneurs

    UM Ventures, College Park is positioned to identify opportunities that could result in startup companies and provide a variety of services to encourage and launch that potential, which includes Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR), who are seasoned business executives with relevant domain expertise who guide the development of go-to-market strategies and business plans, form management teams, identify and help secure funding for ripe ventures.
