The Maryland Center for Humanities Research supports the research goals of the College of Arts and Humanities, which are to: maintain and strengthen excellence in our research; increase the value and impact of our research among UMD leadership and other campus stakeholders; build a research portfolio that reflects ARHU’s mission of diversity and inclusion; and enhance and promote the social value of research in the arts and humanities.

The ARHU Faculty Funds Competition
The ARHU Faculty Funds Competition each year provides conference grants, subvention funds, seed grants, and junior faculty summer fellowships for ARHU faculty.
Keep Creating
Research Working Group program
The Maryland Center for Humanities Research is piloting a Research Working Group program for faculty to generate scholarship and creativity focused on contemporary and historical topics that are relevant in the arts and humanities today. Current group is the Medical Humanities RWG. The groups create outputs that further professional development and mentorship of members, such as grant applications, manuscripts, and conference ideas.
Ruth Carter
Academy Award Winner Ruth E. Carter speaking at UMD
Last year, the Arts and Humanities Dean’s Lecture Series featured legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter, whose career spans more than 35 years and 40 films. An Academy Award Winner for her Afrofuturistic designs in Ryan Coogler's 2018 blockbuster "Black Panther," Carter has also been nominated for her work in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" (1993) and Steven Spielberg's "Amistad" (1998). During this lecture, Carter discussed her research process and how she uses costumes to tell stories about race, culture and politics.

  • Collaborate/sponsor research projects

    The Maryland Center for Humanities Research assists in identifying faculty experts and collaborators for interdisciplinary sponsored research projects. We provide matching funds for external grants and internal opportunities such as Maryland Catalyst Fund. The Center also hosts a Faculty Funds Competition two times a year to award funds for conferences, subvention, fellowships, and faculty research projects.

  • Find entrepreneurship events

    The Maryland Center for Humanities Research Monthly Workshop Series provides workshops designed to support faculty research on a variety of topics. The Center also provides programming in support of the College’s strategic goals and initiatives. This includes the Arts and Humanities Dean's Lecture Series, which engages audiences in thought-provoking lectures and conversations addressing enduring or emerging questions and issues central to the arts and humanities and our global future.

  • Identify/apply for funding & grants

    The Maryland Center for Humanities Research offers a number of resources and services to support faculty in their grant seeking efforts. We offer general grant writing workshops, as well as focused workshops on specific types of applications. In addition, our Research and Grant Writing Coordinator is available to help faculty through individual consultation for identifying funding opportunities, reviewing and revising proposals, preparing budgets, and routing proposals.
